One of the most common questions we hear from first-time cold storage renters: "Do I really just plug it into a regular outlet?" The answer is yes — with one important nuance. Understanding the basics of 110V cold storage will help you plan your rental correctly, avoid any setup issues, and get your unit running as fast as possible.

What "110V" Actually Means

In the United States, standard household and commercial outlets typically operate at either 110–120 volts or 208–240 volts. When we say COOLEX trailers run on 110V, we mean they use the same voltage as virtually every standard outlet in your home, office, or business — the same type of outlet that powers your microwave, your window air conditioner, or your office computer.

This is a significant advantage over permanent commercial walk-in refrigeration, which almost always requires 208V or 240V power — a higher voltage that requires dedicated wiring, a licensed electrician, permits, and in some cases, an electrical panel upgrade.

In plain terms: If there's a working outlet within 50 feet of where you want to place the trailer, you're ready to go. No electrician. No permits. No infrastructure investment.

The One Important Detail: Amperage

Voltage is only half the equation. The other half is amperage — the amount of electrical current flowing through the circuit. COOLEX trailers require a 20-amp dedicated circuit.

Here's what each of those words means:

20-amp

Most standard outlets in residential settings are 15-amp circuits. Commercial facilities, garages, and areas with heavy appliances (like kitchens) often have 20-amp circuits. You can tell the difference by looking at the outlet: a 20-amp outlet has a small horizontal slot on one side of the vertical slots (like a capital T rotated), while a 15-amp outlet has just two parallel vertical slots.

The practical difference: a 20-amp circuit can handle more sustained electrical load without tripping. Refrigeration units draw significant current when the compressor is starting — a 15-amp circuit may trip the breaker, especially in warm conditions.

Dedicated

A dedicated circuit means the outlet is on its own circuit breaker, not shared with other equipment. This is critical for refrigeration. If your outlet is shared with a microwave, a commercial dishwasher, or other high-draw equipment, the combined load can trip the breaker and shut off your cold storage.

How to Find the Right Outlet at Your Location

Restaurants and commercial kitchens

Most commercial kitchen installations already have dedicated 20-amp circuits for equipment. The exterior of a restaurant building often has outlets near the loading dock or service entrance that were installed for just this type of use. Check with your facilities manager or electrician.

Event venues

Barns, event halls, and outdoor venues typically have exterior outlets on dedicated circuits. Confirm with your venue coordinator before your event — many venues have experienced this question before and can immediately direct you to the right outlet.

Outdoor locations (parks, fields, etc.)

Locations without existing power require a generator. A 2,000-watt or larger inverter generator provides sufficient power for a single COOLEX trailer. If you're running multiple units, increase generator capacity proportionally.

Construction sites

Temporary power panels on construction sites typically include 20-amp 110V receptacles. Confirm with your electrical contractor that a dedicated circuit is available and not shared with other high-draw equipment.

The 50-Foot Power Cord

We supply a heavy-duty 50-foot 10-gauge power cord with every rental. Ten gauge is important — thinner cords (12-gauge or 14-gauge) create resistance over longer distances, which reduces voltage at the unit and can cause performance issues or, in some cases, fire hazards.

The 50-foot cord gives you significant flexibility in positioning the trailer — your outlet doesn't need to be right next to the unit. In most cases, 50 feet is more than enough reach from any nearby outlet.

Don't extend with a standard extension cord. Standard household extension cords are not rated for sustained high-current loads like refrigeration. Using an undersized extension cord can cause the cord to overheat, trip the breaker, or in extreme cases, create a fire risk. If 50 feet isn't enough reach, call us — we have solutions.

How Long Until the Trailer Is Cold?

Once plugged in and powered on, a COOLEX trailer reaches its target temperature within 1–2 hours under normal conditions. Several factors affect this timeline:

Energy Use and Your Electric Bill

A common question: how much will this add to my electricity costs? A typical COOLEX medium trailer running in cooler mode uses approximately 3–5 kWh per day under normal conditions (more in hot weather, less in cold weather). At an average commercial electricity rate of $0.12–0.15/kWh, that's roughly $0.36–$0.75 per day in electricity costs — less than a dollar a day in most conditions.

Freezer mode and hot ambient temperatures increase energy consumption, but even in demanding conditions, electricity cost is rarely a meaningful factor in the total cost of a rental.
