Everything you need to know about powering your mobile cooler or freezer trailer — voltage, dedicated circuits, generators, and safety.
Before your cooler or freezer trailer arrives, Coolex Rentals requires access to a proper electrical connection to ensure the refrigeration unit operates safely and efficiently. Our mobile refrigeration trailers are designed to run on a 110-volt, 20-amp dedicated electrical circuit.
The power outlet should be located within approximately 50 to 100 feet of where the trailer will be parked. For convenience, Coolex Rentals supplies a heavy-duty 10-gauge power cord with every rental unit to help provide safe and reliable operation.
Having the correct electrical setup ready before delivery helps avoid delays, power interruptions, and temperature issues during your rental period.
A dedicated circuit is an electrical circuit reserved for a single appliance or piece of equipment. This means no other devices, appliances, tools, or outlets should share power with the refrigeration trailer while it is operating.
Dedicated circuits have their own breaker in the electrical panel and are designed to provide a stable flow of electricity to equipment that requires continuous power. Refrigeration systems contain compressors, motors, and cooling components that cycle on and off throughout the day to maintain safe internal temperatures.
Because refrigeration equipment operates continuously, it requires a reliable electrical source that is not interrupted by other appliances drawing power from the same circuit.
Dedicated circuits are strongly recommended for refrigeration equipment and are commonly required for many large appliances under National Electrical Code safety guidelines.
When too many devices share the same electrical circuit, the total electrical demand can exceed the circuit’s safe capacity. This may lead to:
A dedicated circuit helps ensure your refrigeration trailer receives uninterrupted power and operates at consistent temperatures throughout the rental period.
Many large appliances require dedicated electrical circuits because they use significant power or contain motors and compressors. Examples include:
Mobile cooler and freezer trailers operate similarly to commercial refrigeration equipment, which is why proper electrical setup is extremely important.
If generator power will be used, the generator must meet the voltage and amperage requirements of the refrigeration trailer. Improper generator sizing or unstable electrical output may affect cooling performance or potentially damage refrigeration components.
Only heavy-duty extension cords approved for refrigeration equipment should be used. Standard household extension cords are not designed to safely handle the continuous electrical load required for mobile refrigeration systems.
If you are unsure whether your electrical setup or generator is compatible, Coolex Rentals recommends contacting our team before delivery.
Using a refrigeration trailer on a non-dedicated or overloaded electrical circuit can create serious safety hazards.
Refrigeration units require continuous electrical power to operate compressors and cooling systems properly. If additional appliances or devices are connected to the same circuit, the total electrical load may exceed what the wiring and breaker are designed to safely handle.
When circuits become overloaded, several dangerous conditions may occur, including:
In many cases, overloaded circuits may not immediately show visible warning signs before overheating begins inside walls, outlets, or breaker panels.
For this reason, Coolex Rentals strongly recommends using only a properly rated 110-volt, 20-amp dedicated circuit for all refrigeration trailer rentals. This helps reduce the risk of electrical damage, refrigeration interruptions, and potential fire hazards.
If you are uncertain whether your location has a proper dedicated circuit available, Coolex Rentals recommends consulting a licensed electrician before your scheduled delivery.
If you have questions regarding electrical setup, generator compatibility, trailer placement, or dedicated circuit requirements, our team is happy to assist before delivery day.
